In 2011, Julian Barnes won the Man Booker Prize for literature with the novel#8221; The Sense of an Ending#8221;. Barnes dedicated himself to the writing of history. And his works are post-modernism , simple and accurate. His novels are famous for the fresh plots, the fascinating theme which often rethink profoundly in understanding.

Barnes deliberated the genuineness, objectiveness and completeness of the history. It#8217;s not only out of the ordinary, but also wider and deeper. It can be said that many works of Barnes in recent thirty years, whether the well-known ' Flaubert''''s Parrot#8221;, #8220;A History of the World in 10#189; Chapters#8221;, or #8220;The Outskirts of London#8221;, all of them concentrate on thinking of the unreliable history, history-reality, the individual#8217;s confirmation in the history and other similar theoretical issues. In this novel #8220;The sense of An Ending #8220;no longer analyses the macro-history which appeared in his earlier works, but focus on the personal memory. This fiction is about the history and memory, which is derived from the same origin--New Historicism.

Barnes elaborated the complex relationship among the memory, history and reality in #8220;The Sense of an Ending#8221; by writing mediocre people#8217;s real development process of psychology. The novel shows true meaning of the history ending. Elusive narrative and fantastic memory cause people to think of the history.

In general, works of Barnes are full of post-modernism flavor, and break through the traditional historical novel writing method. #8220;The Sense of an Ending#8221; is a novel which threads time, history, memory into various demonstrations of the story with rational words and emotional words, leading the readers to speculate the definition of possibilities. It can also control the narrative speed and effect readers#8217; interests. The whole novel interprets thoughts of New Historicism from two distinctions, one is between the reality and the memory, and the other is between external description and real events.

Divided by the age, Barnes divided this novel into two parts from the structure. The first part is a period of history about a young person named Toni, which establishes on Toni#8217;s own youth and childhood with a subjective selectivity. It focuses on the thirsty for books and sexual relationship. The failure of love experience with Veronica in college is the main story. The second part focuses on the current life of Toni, whose length accounts to 2/3. Over sixty years, Toni is enjoying a dull and leisurely retirement, immersed in the complacency of life. That letter from attorney like a stone dropped into calm water and suddenly stirred up ripples. The old Toni began to repair and reconstruct his juvenile history. At the moment, the moral confession has become an important force in his own correction. There is no independent sense in the two parts because two suicides as key plots played the contextual role.

Different from the research of Barnes in foreign countries, domestic scholars mainly focus on his view of the authenticity of history in his works and China is still on its primary stage on studying Julian Barnes#8217;s works. This provides a great opportunity for this dissertation to study Barnes, especially the New Historicist View reflected in this fiction.

Besides, as a breakthrough point on Barnes novels, postmodernism has a more positive significance. Julian Barnes applied postmodern writing techniques to his novel as well. There is no lack of postmodern characteristics in The Sense of an Ending.

The reason why this novel is readable is that Julian Barnes applied simple language in his writing and parody everyday life, which makes the novel suitable for the masses. Moreover, the postmodern features of the novel promote the readers to participate in the rebuilding of the novel and their interests of reading are heightened.
