1. 研究目的与意义

English and Chinese belong to different language systems. Since they are used in different custom and culture, there are so many differences between them. For example, some English words are meaningless and superfluous in Chinese. Some, important English words should be omitted even in Chinese.

Ellipsis is of major importance in the process of translation, because some English words are not expressed in written Chinese. Ellipsis is used on the base of the text, and the purpose of it is to make the translation more smooth, fluent and concise, which is in line with the habitual expression way of Chinese. In conclusion, ellipsis is more than the omission of the content of the original text, also means better expression on the base of faithfulness.

Chapter Three indicates that the aim of omission in Chinese-English translation is to meet the English cultural backgrounds and conform to the English customs. 3. 国内外研究现状

In foreign countries, the earliest research on written language in Europe was conducted by z. Harris (1952) and T. F. Mitekell (1957). In the year of 1967, German linguist H. Weinrich put forward the term of written language. He thought that all linguistic research should be based on writing, and languages cannot exist without written symbols. Besides, some other linguists, such as J#8226;R. Firth, K. Pike, Halliday, Hasen, De Beaugrande and Dressler, fostered and laid foundation for written language. In 1976, in the English book Cohesion, Halliday and Hasan divided ellipsis into nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis and clausal ellipsis. In their opinion, nominal ellipsis means the ellipsis within the nominal group (2001:147). This may appear in all kinds of studies: personal, animate object, inanimate object, abstraction, institution, process, quality, state or relation. This classification exerted significant influence on academic study. Thereafter, ellipsis in Chinese and English has been studied in accordance with this theory, which is based on different layers of structure. This kind of study underlined differentiation and similarities of ellipsis in Chinese and English. R.Quirk set five criteria to define ellipsis and also gave the classification of ellipsis which was different from Halliday and Hasan#8217;s. Other linguists#8217; study on object ellipsis will be introduced as well. In recent years, Chinese linguists have made some achievements on the comparative study of ellipsis. Wu Jiemin (1981) believed that the phenomena of ellipsis in English and Chinese was different. Zhao Zhiyi (1981) and Zuo Yan (1995) noted that there were some similarities and differences of ellipsis between Chinese and English. Many other linguists, like Ren Xueliang (1982), Zhang Jin and ChenYunqing (1981), and Lu Tianshi (1985) etc, made references to ellipsis when comparing grammar or cohesive devices in both Chinese and English.
